World Environment Day Photography Contest Highlights Climate Action
Kolkata, 8 May 2026:
The British Deputy High Commission in Kolkata, along with the Indo-British Scholars’ Association (IBSA) and Kolkata Centre for Creativity, is excited to announce the World Environment Day 2026 Photography Contest. This contest invites photographers to tell compelling stories about environmental conservation and climate action.
Supported by the Kolkata Society for Cultural Heritage and IEM-UEM University Kolkata, this initiative showcases how photography can raise awareness about urgent environmental issues. It also highlights innovative solutions for a healthier planet.
Photographers from India and beyond are encouraged to explore themes like biodiversity, sustainability, and community-led climate action. Selected photos will be displayed at the Kolkata Centre for Creativity from 9-13 June 2026, coinciding with World Environment Day. This exhibition aims to spark important conversations and inspire collective action for a greener future.
Dr. Andrew Fleming, the British Deputy High Commissioner to East and Northeast India, shared his thoughts: “Photography connects us to the urgent challenges we face. Through this contest, we aim to amplify voices that show both the risks ahead and the solutions available to us.”
The jury includes renowned experts like Dhritiman Mukherjee, an award-winning nature photographer; Haimanti Poddar, Senior Climate and Energy Advisor at the British Deputy High Commission; and Ashwika Kapur, a wildlife filmmaker. They will judge entries that capture striking narratives of our environmental landscape.
Richa Agarwal, Chairperson of KCC, emphasizes the importance of art in discussions about our planet: “We’re thrilled to support an initiative that welcomes diverse voices and stories about climate action and sustainability.”
Reetasri Ghosh, President of IBSA, pointed out the goal of the contest: “This is a chance to share powerful environmental stories through photography. We hope these images will inspire awareness and action towards a greener future.”
This contest is also supported by organizations like Roundglass Sustain and Heritage Bengal Global Connect, showcasing a unified effort towards sustainability.
