Multiple people were injured in a boat explosion near Haulover Sandbar on Saturday. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue reported that around 25 emergency units, including the Coast Guard, responded to the call around 12:45 p.m.
When help arrived, they found many people with different injuries, including burns. Battalion Chief Juan Arias shared that because of the number of injured, they upgraded the situation to a Level 2 Mass Casualty Incident. A total of 11 victims were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Witness Robert Lee, who works on a nearby charter boat, witnessed the explosion and described it as clearly gas-related. “We saw three people fly out of the boat,” he said, explaining that the captain likely did not check safety protocols before starting the engine. “He turned the key without opening the hatches or turning on the blowers.”
Witnesses reported that the fire spread rapidly, engulfing the boat in flames within minutes. Many individuals were seen being carried away on stretchers, some with extensive burns. “It was a hot fire—quick and intense,” one bystander recalled. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with officials yet to confirm whether it was officially an explosion.
The boat involved was a Press Cruiser 400 Express, 40 feet long, named Nauti Nabor, registered to Mark Mihm from Denison, Texas. This vessel was certified for recreational use, according to data from the U.S. Coast Guard.
Fire officials emphasized the importance of safety on the water. Arias reminded boaters to carry essential equipment, such as radios, life vests, and fire extinguishers. “Having an experienced captain is crucial,” he added, especially during busy boating seasons.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns in boating safety. In recent years, boating incidents have been on the rise, particularly during peak seasons. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, there were over 4,000 reported boating accidents in 2021. Many of these incidents could potentially be prevented with proper safety measures in place.
As social media discussions heat up about this incident, many users are sharing opinions on safety regulations and the need for more awareness among boaters. Just this past summer, a survey found that 70% of boaters believed that more safety training could help reduce accidents.
