Giants Update: Logan Webb Hits 15-Day IL as Trevor McDonald Joins the Roster

Giants pitcher Logan Webb is on the injured list due to right knee bursitis. The team anticipates he’ll be back when eligible. Trevor McDonald, who recently played in Triple-A, is returning to join the rotation.

In his last outing, Webb struggled against the Padres, giving up six earned runs in just four innings. He explained, “I’ve dealt with it for a little while, but it’s still no excuse.” This break will give him a chance to recover.

Webb has been a sturdy presence in the Giants’ lineup, consistently making at least 32 starts in the last four seasons. He’s led the National League in innings pitched for three years straight. His last stint on the injured list was back in 2021, when he faced shoulder and back issues.

This year, despite his workload, Webb’s performance has been less impressive. He has a 5.06 ERA over eight starts, and his strikeout rate has dipped to 20.2%, below the league average. Notably, his walk rate has also risen slightly. Nevertheless, he excels at getting ground balls, achieving a 58.5% ground ball rate. Advanced metrics suggest his true performance might be better than what his ERA indicates, with xFIP and SIERA around 3.50.

Meanwhile, McDonald is back in the majors after a short stint in the minors. He previously impressed with his performance, including three hitless innings in his 2024 debut. Last year, he recorded a 3.60 ERA over three appearances. Despite a shaky Spring Training that hurt his chances for a roster spot, he’ll have the opportunity to prove himself in upcoming games, starting with the Dodgers on Monday.

With Webb out, McDonald’s return adds depth to the pitching staff, allowing the team to maintain its competitive edge. Keeping an eye on his performance could be crucial for the Giants as they navigate the season.
