POCATELLO — Many residents in southeastern Idaho are facing the possibility of losing their health insurance coverage. Regence BlueShield of Idaho, a major insurance provider, is in negotiations with Portneuf Medical Center and its parent company, Ardent Health Services, over costs. Portneuf has announced plans to end its contract with Regence for commercial and individual plan members on June 15, 2026, if an agreement isn’t reached.

Regence claims that Portneuf is requesting significant increases in reimbursement rates—more than double the current rate of inflation. They argue that agreeing to these demands would lead to higher premiums for local businesses and families. “We invest 87 cents of every premium dollar directly into our members’ healthcare,” Regence stated.

In response, Portneuf maintains that they are underpaid compared to other insurers in the area. They cite issues with unpaid claims and administrative burdens as challenges that affect patient care. According to Portneuf, negotiations are necessary for the sustainability of care in the community.

If no agreement is reached, many Portneuf facilities will be out-of-network for Regence members after the cutoff date. This could mean higher costs for patients in non-emergency situations. However, emergency care will remain unaffected by an out-of-network designation due to legal requirements.

Patients still may qualify for continued in-network coverage if they meet specific criteria, such as needing urgent care for serious conditions or being pregnant.

Recent statistics show that healthcare costs have been rising sharply across the country. A report from the Kaiser Family Foundation revealed that employer-sponsored health premiums rose by about 4% in the last year alone. This trend adds urgency to the ongoing negotiations in Pocatello, as families already face rising health costs.
