UConn Softball Clinches BIG EAST Title Again

The UConn softball team celebrated a big win on Saturday, securing their second consecutive BIG EAST Tournament Championship by beating Creighton 8-3. This victory is the ninth conference tournament title for UConn, earning them a spot in the NCAA Tournament once more.

Graduate pitcher Jessica Walter took the mound and delivered a standout performance. In her 18th start of the season, she threw a complete game, allowing just three runs despite facing a tough Creighton lineup. Walter stranded eight runners on base and secured her eighth win of the season, which earned her the title of BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Player.

UConn got off to a strong start with a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Cat Petteys, named BIG EAST Player of the Year, launched a double that brought Savannah Ring home from first base. Kaitlyn Breslin followed suit, hitting a double that scored Petteys, while Emma Willers capped off the inning with a sacrifice fly, giving the Huskies an early boost.

Creighton answered back in the first inning, narrowing the score to 3-1. Both teams settled into a rhythm, with pitchers keeping the score locked until the fifth inning, when Creighton managed to tie the game at 3-3. Walter handled the pressure, securing two important outs to keep the game tied.

UConn’s offense exploded in the sixth inning, scoring five runs to pull ahead. Heidi Barber delivered a game-changing triple, setting the stage for further hits from players like Petteys and Breslin, extending the lead to a decisive 8-3.

Walter finished strong, retiring six of the last eight batters, sealing the victory for the Huskies.
