A tragic incident occurred at a Chelsea subway station, leading to the death of 76-year-old Ross Falzone. The man accused of this act, Rhamell Burke, had just hours earlier been released from a psychiatric evaluation.
According to police, around 9:30 p.m. last Thursday, Burke approached Falzone from behind and pushed him down the stairs at the 18th Street station. Tragically, Falzone was found unconscious and later died from serious injuries at Bellevue Hospital.
The authorities describe the attack as unprovoked, prompting an ongoing homicide investigation. Just hours before the incident, Burke had been acting erratically outside a police precinct. He was taken to Bellevue for evaluation after he pulled a stick from a trash bin and approached officers. After an assessment, he was released only to be involved in the fatal shoving later that night.
Previously, Burke had several arrests, including an assault on law enforcement. Mayor Zohran Mamdani has called for an investigation into Bellevue’s discharge protocols. He stated, “New Yorkers deserve answers” about the steps taken before Burke’s release.
Falzone lived on the Upper West Side and was well-regarded in his community. His sister, Donna, expressed devastation over her brother’s death, recounting their recent birthday celebration together. She described Ross as a gentle person, emphasizing that he would never harm anyone. “We got a call like that at 4 in the morning,” she reflected, filled with shock and anger.
A few hours after the subway incident, Burke was caught at Penn Station, arrested, and later arraigned.
