Women in rural Rivers State, Nigeria, are raising their voices for climate justice. These women are part of a broader movement across Africa, pushing for change amidst worsening climate issues. Supported by various environmental organizations, they are becoming more aware of how climate change affects their lives, particularly due to oil spills and pollution.
Recent statistics highlight the severity of these challenges. According to the Global Gender Gap Report, women globally are experiencing increased vulnerability due to climate change, with those in Africa bearing a disproportionate burden. These trends prompt urgent action.
Mfon Utin, is a key figure in this movement. With her organization, Healthy Life Development Initiative (HELDi), she’s working to educate rural women about their rights, environmental health, and issues surrounding sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).
During African Women’s Climate Justice Day, held annually on April 15, advocates emphasized the theme “Our Lands, Our Voices: African Women United for Reparations and Climate Justice!” This day is a reminder of the struggles faced by African women, who often experience the harshest consequences of environmental damage.
Utin notes, “In many communities, patriarchal systems silence women and limit their access to land and leadership.” Despite their significant roles as breadwinners and caretakers, these women face discrimination and barriers to crucial resources.
The impacts of pollution and resource extraction have left many women battling poverty and food insecurity. For instance, the UN reports that women in resource-rich countries often face greater health issues due to environmental degradation. This highlights the urgent need for reparations and restoration.
Utin emphasizes that the fight for climate justice is not only about compensation but also about restoring dignity and ensuring women’s rights are respected. She calls for stronger partnerships with local governments and organizations to include women’s perspectives in decision-making processes.
Moreover, she asserts the importance of men as allies in this fight. Men should support justice initiatives and challenge oppressive norms that hinder women’s progress.
