The University of Northern Colorado (UNC) recently celebrated a significant milestone, honoring over 1,000 graduates during two days of commencement ceremonies. This year, a total of 1,172 students—both undergraduates and graduates—received their diplomas. The events took place at the Bank of Colorado Arena in Greeley.
The graduate ceremony, held on Friday, recognized about 386 students completing doctoral, specialist, or master’s degrees. Notably, this is the university’s largest graduate class in five years, reflecting growth in advanced education. Dr. Jennifer Thomas, an education expert, noted that graduate programs have been gaining popularity as more students seek specialized skills in today’s job market.
On Saturday, three separate ceremonies celebrated nearly 800 undergraduate students earning bachelor’s degrees. This included graduates from various fields such as health sciences, business, and the arts. The Monfort College of Business stood out, awarding its highest number of degrees in five years—141 in total.
A bright spot in this year’s graduation is the increase in diversity among graduates. The spring class included a five-year high of Hispanic and Latino students, representing 25.9% of undergraduates and 17.4% of graduates. This trend is in line with national statistics showing that the proportion of minority students in colleges has been steadily increasing. According to a report by the National Center for Education Statistics, this shift emphasizes the importance of diverse voices in higher education.
Another significant achievement is the number of first-generation students. More than 300 undergraduates (38.7%) and 118 graduate students (30.3%) are the first in their families to earn degrees. This is an important milestone, not just for the individuals but also for their families and communities. Many graduates shared their experiences on social media, expressing gratitude for the support they received along the way.
UNC has also announced that 303 additional students are expected to meet their degree requirements this summer, allowing them to participate in the spring ceremonies as well.
