Rowan University Honors Outstanding Doctoral Scholars and Specialists at 2026 Recognition Ceremony

Evan Hutt recently earned his Ph.D. in biomedical engineering, focusing on a new cancer therapy. He celebrated this achievement at Rowan University’s Doctoral Recognition Ceremony on May 8. Finally wearing the doctoral robe and hood felt special for him.

The ceremony took place at Esbjornson Gymnasium, where over 90 doctoral students were honored. This event highlighted their hard work and the university’s growth as a public research institution.

Welcoming remarks came from Provost Vojislava “Voki” Pophristic, who noted the effort and courage these graduates displayed throughout their studies. “You’ve pushed boundaries and contributed new knowledge,” she said.

University President Ali Houshmand praised the graduates for their commitment and reminded them that they are now producers of knowledge. “You will lead future learners and educators,” he stated, emphasizing their new roles.

The keynote address was given by Dr. Sethuraman Panchanathan, a prominent computer scientist and former NSF director. He encouraged the graduates to remember certain messages tied to the letters in Rowan’s name: stay curious, open doors for others, work with purpose, act with integrity, and keep learning. He emphasized their potential to shape the future, saying, “Go about doing that.”

After this, Tabbetha Dobbins, the dean of the School of Graduate Studies, reminded graduates of their responsibility. “Earning your doctorate here at Rowan means you carry an important duty,” she said.

Post-ceremony, Evan shared his joy at being hooded by his advisor, Peter Galie. “It’s a meaningful tradition,” he reflected. “Pete has been an incredible support throughout my journey.”

Graduates are now stepping into influential roles. A recent study by the National Science Foundation shows that Ph.D. holders often contribute significantly to innovation and workforce development. Their research and ideas can lead to breakthroughs in various fields.

Rowan’s Commencement Week events continue until May 14, celebrating the achievements of new scholars ready to change the world.
