Southern University in Baton Rouge is taking a big step forward by adding a new $43 million residence hall for freshmen and sophomores. This project was given the green light by the Louisiana Board of Regents in April, as reported by The Advocate.
The new dorm will rise four stories high and accommodate about 500 students. It will include study rooms, lounge areas on every floor, and even dining facilities, making it a more attractive space for students.
Financing for this new residence hall will come from private equity, thanks to the Southern University Foundation. Chancellor John Pierre mentioned that the foundation will lease the land for the construction.
This residence hall is just the first phase in a broader plan to upgrade student housing at the university. The next phase will focus on upper-level students. It includes creating apartment-style dorms for around 350 residents, complete with laundry machines and kitchenettes in each unit. This will give students more independence and comfort.
The campus will also get a new quad that includes patios and recreational spaces, enhancing the social environment for students. Pierre emphasized that freshmen and sophomores who want to live on campus will have priority for assignments in the new hall.
Overall, the entire housing expansion will cost around $77 million. Southern University aims to have the new residence hall ready by fall 2027. This initiative not only addresses the need for more student housing but also reflects a growing trend among universities to invest in campus life and student wellbeing.
