This past Saturday, I experienced a whirlwind of sports and technology that would have left my high school self scratching his head. Imagine juggling an NCAA men’s lacrosse tournament, an Ivy League softball championship, and a Zoom meeting—all at the same time. Yes, I had the meeting on my laptop, the lacrosse game on the smart TV, and I was keeping up with texts on my phone.
Surprisingly, everything went well. The meeting wrapped up smoothly, and Hopkins clinched victory in overtime against Cornell. Meanwhile, the Princeton Tigers dominated the Ivy League softball tournament, finishing with an impressive 8-0 victory over Columbia, securing their place as champions.
Princeton’s performance this season has been nothing short of remarkable. They tied the Ivy record with 18 league wins and outpaced the competition by six games. To put it in perspective, there was a larger gap between Princeton and second place than between second place and the last position. It’s rare to see such dominance in any league.
During the tournament, Princeton faced a tough start, trailing Brown 4-0 in their first game. But they turned it around, scoring 21 runs and allowing just 2 in the following matches, eventually defeating Brown 7-5 and Columbia 6-0. On the final day, Princeton needed just one win to take home the title—Columbia needed to win to force a decisive game. The Tigers struck hard in the fourth inning, scoring five runs and sealing the win with three more by the fifth.
Cassidy Shaw, the star pitcher, was instrumental throughout. She pitched brilliantly across all three days, racking up 17 strikeouts and just one walk. No wonder she was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player!
Celebrations erupted, with plenty of cheers and smiles all around—definitely a moment for the Tigers and their fans. This season marks one of the best in Princeton’s history, and they head into the NCAA tournament for the 13th time, carrying the momentum of a five-time defending Ivy championship.
Now, they’re set to face Stanford in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Oklahoma State, hosting the regional, ranks 15th in Division I RPI, ahead of Stanford, at 16th, and Princeton is 83rd. While rankings matter, what truly counts is the Tigers’ confidence and momentum as they aim to extend their fantastic run.
