Health officials in the U.S. are gearing up for a press conference to discuss the situation involving 17 Americans from the cruise ship Hondius, which experienced a hantavirus outbreak. These passengers recently landed in Omaha, Nebraska, where they will quarantine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
The group arrived shortly after 1:30 a.m. CT on a State Department flight. They were first evacuated from the ship while it was anchored in the Canary Islands. Health workers, dressed in protective gear, helped them disembark safely.
One of the American passengers tested “mildly” positive for the virus but isn’t showing symptoms, while another has mild symptoms. Out of caution, both were transported in specialized containment units.
Their stay at the National Quarantine Unit will involve health evaluations and daily monitoring. Dr. Michael Wadman, the unit’s medical director, explained that each passenger will have a private room and access to a health care team experienced in infectious diseases.
It’s important to note that hantavirus is primarily spread through rodent droppings and is not easily transmitted from person to person. The World Health Organization has stated that the general public should remain calm; the risk is low, and this outbreak does not relate to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Historically, hantavirus emerged in the early 1990s in the U.S. and has caused severe illness, with a mortality rate of around 35% for hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. Experts from the Infectious Diseases Society of America are studying the Andes strain involved in this outbreak, which is known for having rare human-to-human transmission.
Symptoms can start like the flu, including fever, chills, and muscle aches, and may progress to more severe respiratory issues. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) emphasizes basic precautions, such as avoiding rodent habitats and proper cleaning methods in infested areas.
The quarantine measures in place reflect a cautious approach as state health departments monitor passengers from various states, including Georgia, Texas, Arizona, and Virginia, for any signs of illness.
