Kyiv, Ukraine – In late April, the plight of four starving soldiers stirred emotions across Ukraine. They had reportedly gone almost 17 days without food, isolated from their brigade after Russian bombs destroyed their supply routes.
Anastasia Silchuk, whose husband is in the 14th Mechanised Brigade, shared on social media, “Fighters faint because of starvation, they drink rainwater.” She described her husband’s desperate pleas for help, emphasizing the dire need for food and water.
Soldiers like Oleksandr have also faced extreme hunger while defending their homeland. Stuck in a hidden bunker, he longed for his family and basic meals. “You dream of a hot meal,” he shared, recalling weeks of surviving on snacks and minimal water.
The war’s changing nature makes resupplying troops increasingly difficult. Drones now hover over battle zones, making traditional supply routes nearly obsolete. As Oleksandr noted, “Gone are the days when you could just come out of a bunker to have a smoke.”
This shift has turned supply runs into critical missions. Drones carry ammunition, food, and medical supplies, often serving as the lifeline for soldiers in remote outposts. Andriy Pronin, a pioneer in Ukraine’s drone warfare, stated that their new supply system generally runs smoothly. Still, researcher Nikolay Mitrokhin cautioned that less than 10% of troops receive these drone deliveries consistently, raising concerns about future shortages.
After the images of starving soldiers went viral, Ukrainian authorities acknowledged the problem. They ordered an investigation into the inadequate food supplies. The Defense Ministry emphasized that no soldier should suffer starvation due to supply issues.
On the Russian side, circumstances aren’t any better for soldiers. Many receive minimal supplies and face orders to move in small groups, which can make them easy targets for attacking drones. Reports suggest that some Russian troops are left with only meager rations, like a small bottle of water and a few chocolate bars. A former soldier named Mohammad described how he scavenged for food after being misled into fighting. He lost significant weight during his time in an abandoned village, highlighting the dire situation many face.
As of October 2025, Ukrainian intelligence reported that Russian soldiers were often stranded with critical shortages of food and ammunition. This desperate situation led to unverified accounts of extreme measures among some troops, including cannibalism.
