Former Arcadia mayor Eileen Wang is set to plead guilty to charges related to acting as an illegal agent for the People’s Republic of China. This comes after an investigation by the Department of Justice (DOJ).
Elected to the Arcadia City Council in November 2022, Wang allegedly participated in activities directed by Chinese officials through a website called “U.S. News Center.” This site aimed to serve the local Chinese American audience but reportedly spread pro-China propaganda instead.
According to the DOJ, Wang and her associate, Yaoning “Mike” Sun, took orders from the Chinese government to create content that supported their narrative. They began this operation in late 2020 and continued until 2022.
One alarming incident occurred in June 2021 when they received a draft essay via WeChat from a Chinese official. They quickly published a rebuttal to an LA Times article about labor practices in Xinjiang, the region in China that has faced scrutiny for human rights abuses. Their rapid response drew a thank-you from the official, highlighting a concerning level of coordination.
Wang resigned from her position on Monday, according to the Arcadia city website. In her plea agreement, she acknowledged her involvement with the Chinese government while on U.S. soil and failing to inform federal authorities.
Wang’s statement, delivered through her lawyer, expressed regret for her actions, attributing them to personal trust in the wrong people. “She apologizes for her mistakes,” the statement said, emphasizing her unchanged commitment to the Arcadia community.
Wang’s co-conspirator, Sun, is currently serving a four-year sentence for similar charges. Wang now faces a potential 10-year prison sentence after her expected guilty plea.
This incident underscores a broader concern about foreign influence in local politics, particularly in areas with significant immigrant populations. In Arcadia, nearly 60% of residents are of Asian descent, making the community more susceptible to targeted misinformation campaigns.
