Discover How Smith’s P.K. Kannan Earned the Prestigious Title of Distinguished University Professor

The University of Maryland recently honored P.K. Kannan, the Dean’s Chair in Marketing Science at the Robert H. Smith School of Business, with the title of Distinguished University Professor. This accolade is the highest academic recognition at UMD for tenured faculty.

Kannan is well-respected in the fields of marketing modeling and digital marketing. He has made significant contributions, serving as editor-in-chief for the International Journal of Research in Marketing and taking on leadership roles within organizations like the American Marketing Association and INFORMS.

With this new title, Kannan joins an elite group at the Smith School. Other notable faculty members with this title include marketing experts Roland Rust and Michel Wedel, along with finance professor Albert “Pete” Kyle.

This recognition comes after a string of recent achievements for Kannan. He will become a Fellow of the American Marketing Association in 2026 and has already been inducted into the INFORMS Society for Marketing Science, a distinction shared by only about 40 scholars globally. In addition, he received the AMA Tech SIG Lifetime Achievement Award in 2025 and the EMAC Distinguished Marketing Scholar Award in 2024.

These honors reflect Kannan’s enduring impact on the marketing field. A recent survey found that 78% of marketing professionals believe academic research significantly influences their practices. Kannan’s contributions help bridge the gap between theory and real-world application, making his work valuable not just in academia but also in the industry.
