Healthcare leaders, nursing faculty, researchers, and students came together at the University of Nevada, Reno, at Lake Tahoe for the 3rd LGBTQ+ Nursing Summit from April 29 to May 1, 2026. This summit was all about enhancing LGBTQ+ health and healthcare.
Hosted by the Orvis School of Nursing, the event focused on practical strategies in research, education, practice, and policy. This collaborative gathering sought to create lasting change beyond the three days. Participants aimed to develop priorities for research and ways to integrate LGBTQ+ health into nursing education.
Dean Charles Yingling highlighted the importance of such meetings. “It’s crucial for those working with marginalized communities to support each other,” he noted. He emphasized that nurses play a vital role in advocating for both patients and the broader community.
Keynote speaker Jasen Brooks shared a powerful message about the significance of education in healthcare. “Our job goes beyond sharing information; we must empower both nurses and patients,” he said, stressing that many marginalized communities are underserved.
Two undergraduate students, Brayson Gomez and Hope Crockell, joined the summit and expressed their enthusiasm. “We don’t discuss LGBTQ+ issues in healthcare enough,” Gomez said. He highlighted his desire to learn how to better support LGBTQ+ individuals as a future nurse.
Crockell echoed this sentiment, adding that her interest in improving healthcare for LGBTQ+ patients is deeply personal. “I wanted to be part of conversations that aim to create more inclusive environments,” she said.
Both students felt empowered by the experience. Crockell mentioned that her perspective as a student was appreciated, making her more confident in discussions. “Nurses play a huge role in shaping healthcare systems,” she said, reinforcing their influence beyond the bedside.
The summit also left participants excited about future advocacy opportunities within nursing. Gomez remarked on the welcoming atmosphere and genuine interest from national leaders. “I felt they wanted to see us succeed,” he said.
The event wrapped up with plans for ongoing collaborations, ensuring that the discussions and initiatives created would extend throughout the year.
In today’s evolving healthcare landscape, it’s vital to advocate for equity. Statistics show that LGBTQ+ individuals face significant barriers in accessing care.
