In a 2025 study, researchers found that sea turtles with remoras tended to graze less, and only one instance of a remora cleaning a turtle was recorded. Surprisingly, some remoras have even been spotted entering their hosts’ bodies, which raises questions about their behavior. Yeager’s latest research suggests that remoras are becoming more like pests, rather than allies.

The term “cloacal diving” has emerged from her study, which highlighted that remoras can swim into the cloaca—an all-purpose opening used by some animals for excretion and reproduction—of manta rays. These observations reveal a behavior not previously noted and suggest that the relationship between remoras and their hosts might not be as mutually beneficial as once thought.

Yeager analyzed 15 years of footage and documented instances of remoras entering manta rays and other large fish. The suction power of remoras can be strong enough to damage their hosts, potentially causing harm in delicate areas.

This complexity speaks to the nature of symbiotic relationships in the ocean. As Yeager notes, it’s not always a straightforward partnership. Just as in human interactions, relationships in nature can range from friendly to challenging.

Understanding these dynamics is crucial. According to a recent survey, 60% of ocean researchers emphasize the need for more studies on symbiotic relationships in marine ecosystems.
