Daryl Morey is no longer the president of basketball operations for the Philadelphia 76ers. This decision followed a meeting with team owners Josh Harris and David Blitzer. Coach Nick Nurse will remain in his role for another season.
Bob Myers, who oversees sports for Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, will temporarily lead the search for Morey’s replacement. Myers is known for helping build the Golden State Warriors into a championship team.
Morey spent six seasons with the 76ers, leading the team to five playoff appearances and achieving a record of 270-212. However, the 76ers have not made it past the second round of the playoffs since Morey took charge, and they haven’t been to the conference finals since 2001.
One of Morey’s significant moves was trading for James Harden, a player he had successfully worked with in Houston. But their relationship soured, especially after the 76ers decided against offering Harden a long-term contract in 2023. After a public fallout where Harden called Morey a liar, he was traded to the LA Clippers, marking a dramatic end to that chapter.
Under Morey’s leadership, the 76ers also gave big contracts to players like Paul George and Joel Embiid. Yet, the trio of George, Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey played only 43 games together over the past two seasons, with a mixed record of just 21 wins and 22 losses.
Morey also made some bold draft choices, selecting guard VJ Edgecombe with the third overall pick in 2025. Edgecombe has shown promise, finishing third in Rookie of the Year voting this season.
As for Coach Nurse, his record with the 76ers is 116-130, mostly affected by a tough previous season where they finished 24-58. Nonetheless, Nurse led the team to a remarkable victory this season, overcoming a 3-1 series deficit against the Boston Celtics.
