State Rep. Jamie Thompson recently paid tribute to nurses who play a crucial role in caring for Michigan’s vulnerable populations. Her resolution, House Resolution 306, designates May 10-16 as Skilled Nursing Care Week across the state.
“This week is all about recognizing the hard work and compassion of nurses in skilled care facilities,” said Thompson, who is also a Licensed Practical Nurse. “It’s important to honor not just the nurses, but also the volunteers and family members who support those in need.”
The American Health Care Association established National Skilled Nursing Care Week in 1967. It begins on Mother’s Day each year and encourages facilities to host events that celebrate residents, staff, and volunteers. This year’s theme, “Moments in Bloom,” emphasizes how even small gestures of kindness can create meaningful experiences for everyone involved.
During this week, families are encouraged to visit their loved ones in care facilities. Such visits not only lift spirits but also strengthen community ties. Thompson, now in her second term and serving as Vice Chair of the House Health Policy Committee, believes these connections are vital for building a stronger Michigan.
According to a recent survey by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, nearly 80% of nurses expressed feeling valued in their roles, highlighting the importance of acknowledgment and appreciation in healthcare. This sentiment resonates especially during Skilled Nursing Care Week, where communities come together to show their support.
As we celebrate these caring professionals, it’s a good time to reflect on how every act, big or small, contributes to a person’s quality of life. The dedication of nurses makes a real difference every day, enriching the lives of those they care for.
