Exciting times are ahead for chess lovers with the FIDE World University Team Chess Championship 2026. Recently, the first stage wrapped up, featuring teams from universities around the globe competing in online qualifiers. This inaugural event is a collaboration by FIDE, the Kazakhstan Chess Federation, and local authorities in Almaty, where the finals will occur from August 3-9, 2026.
The championship consists of three stages: two online Swiss qualifiers and an online knockout phase, leading to the final event in Almaty. The first two qualifiers took place on Lichess.org, with each attracting a strong field of participants.
Qualifier 1: Americas and Africa (May 2)
The first qualifier featured 22 university teams battling it out in a seven-round tournament. Saint Louis University took the lead, finishing with 13 match points and strong performances from their grandmasters. Webster University and the University of Texas at Dallas also secured spots in the next stage, showcasing the depth of talent present.
Qualifier 2: Europe and Asia (May 9)
The second qualifier brought together 36 teams. Ural State Mining University stood out, earning first place with solid match points. With an impressive roster, their performance highlighted the competitive nature of this stage. Notably, teams like Universitas Gunadarma from Indonesia and SRMIST from India demonstrated their skills as well.
With both qualifiers complete, the focus shifts to the next stage, the Online Knockout, on May 16-17. Here, the 32 teams will compete in a knockout format, with the top eight teams moving forward to the finals. The event not only attracts strong players but also fosters camaraderie and global connections among universities.
