Yale New Haven Health is stepping up its game to help eligible patients enroll in Medicaid. Many people qualify for this vital service but aren’t signed up yet. By teaming up with Escher Health, a company that uses artificial intelligence to support healthcare, they aim to make the enrollment process smoother. Escher Health has already assisted over 100,000 individuals in finding Medicaid and other essential programs.
This partnership is expected to enhance patient care, cut down on unpaid medical bills, and streamline various operations. Yale New Haven Health operates five hospitals, including two critical Safety Net Hospitals in Connecticut, which provide necessary services to low-income communities.
Why It Matters
Recent federal policies are complicating Medicaid enrollment. Many individuals face new work reporting requirements and have to re-evaluate their eligibility every six months. A staggering 11.8 million Americans might lose their health coverage over the next decade due to these changes.
Yale New Haven Health has pointed out that the funding they receive from Medicaid doesn’t cover the costs of care. In 2024, the expenses for tending to 663,509 Medicaid patients exceeded what they were reimbursed by $450 million. The health system is actively urging lawmakers to invest more in Medicaid to ensure that they can continue providing essential services.
A Growing Concern
An analysis by Public Citizen revealed that 446 hospitals across the country are vulnerable to cutting services or shutting down because of planned Medicaid cuts. Hospitals are considered at high risk if at least 20% of their revenue comes from Medicaid and similar programs.
Additionally, a recent report showed that participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) declined by more than 3 million people, marking an 8% drop. This decline took place between July 2025 and January 2026, highlighting the impact of federal funding cuts on food assistance.
