Ullyot emphasizes that diversity is essential for the NFL’s success. He points out that the league’s policy is to hire from a “broad, diverse, and growing pool of high caliber talent.” He defines diversity as including all the differences among people, which goes beyond just race or gender.

Regarding the Rooney Rule, he clarifies that it doesn’t force teams to hire or fire anyone. Instead, it ensures that teams consider a wide range of candidates during the interview process. He reassures that no team is stopped from interviewing any candidate they wish.

Ullyot also notes that recent changes to the NFL’s website about the Rooney Rule were made because Uthmeier’s letter highlighted outdated information. The league is actively updating its policies to keep them current.

Despite this, Uthmeier seems unmoved by Ullyot’s explanations. On May 13, he replied to the NFL and issued a subpoena to the league, indicating he still believes the NFL’s practices are not in line with the law.

A 2022 survey by the National Football League Players Association revealed that more than 70% of players of color feel the NFL should be held accountable for its diversity policies.
