Allegiant Air and Sun Country Join Forces: What This Merger Means for Budget Travelers

Allegiant Air has officially acquired Sun Country Airlines in a move that changes the landscape for low-cost carriers. This merger wraps up after getting necessary approvals, with the deal valued at around $1.5 billion, including debt. Allegiant’s CEO, Gregory Anderson, views this as a pivotal moment, aiming to expand affordable travel options for customers.

The merger comes at a tricky time for budget airlines, especially after Spirit Airlines recently shut down. Rising jet fuel prices, driven by global tensions, are causing ticket prices to climb. Low-cost airlines like Allegiant and Spirit struggle because they have less flexibility to absorb these costs.

Spirit Airlines, for instance, faced severe financial issues and ceased operations on May 2 after 34 years of service. Their struggles included heavy debt and cash flow problems, exacerbated by rising fuel prices.

In contrast, Allegiant and Sun Country believe their merger will help them create new revenue possibilities. Sun Country’s cargo services for Amazon and charter flights expand the offerings on the table. Together, they plan to serve nearly 175 cities with about 195 planes, providing more options, particularly in smaller markets.

For travelers, it’s business as usual for now. Both airlines will operate separately while they figure out their integration. Allegiant aims to eventually unify under its brand while expanding connections within its network. Minneapolis–St. Paul, Sun Country’s base, will still be a key hub.

Experts suggest that this strategic partnership could provide a buffer against rising operational costs and a more diverse service portfolio. According to recent industry reports, around 23% of U.S. airlines expect to raise fares in response to increased fuel prices. This merger may allow Allegiant and Sun Country to confidently navigate these challenging waters together, making travel simpler and more accessible for everyone.
