Peter Jackson recently shared his thoughts on collaborating with Stephen Colbert for a new Tolkien-inspired film. Jackson praised Colbert’s deep knowledge of Tolkien, noting he had never met anyone quite like him.
A year ago, before learning of the cancellation of his show, Colbert approached Jackson with an idea for a Tolkien film. Jackson spoke about this during the Cannes Film Festival, where he received a Palme d’Or.
Colbert’s pitch impressed Jackson, who then connected him with his longtime collaborator, Philippa Boyens. Together, they spent a year developing the story, with Colbert even traveling to New Zealand to work closely with the team.
The cancellation of Colbert’s show by CBS was a shock, according to Jackson. He felt that the series didn’t get the ending it deserved. Yet, Jackson believes that the Tolkien project gives Colbert a positive focus during what must be a difficult time.
“He’s actually quite happy,” Jackson mentioned. “Having this creative outlet helps him cope with the unexpected change.”
The film, which was announced in March, is tentatively titled “The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past.” It will follow the adventures of Sam, Merry, and Pippin as they try to retrace their original journey. The story also introduces Sam’s daughter, Elanor, who uncovers a hidden secret related to the War of the Ring.
This film marks Colbert’s first major venture into movie development, although he’s previously worked with Jackson in “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.” He also directed a 2019 short film, “Darrylgorn,” featuring actors from the “Lord of the Rings” series.
