A tourist from Covington, Washington, was recently arrested for throwing a rock at Lani, a beloved Hawaiian monk seal. This incident took place on a beach in Maui and sparked outrage among locals and conservationists alike.
Igor Mykhaylovych Lytvynchuk, 38, faces charges for harassing a protected animal. Federal agents apprehended him near Seattle, and he is scheduled to appear in court soon. Witnesses reported seeing him throw a rock, about the size of a coconut, directly at the seal. The rock narrowly missed Lani, causing her to behave erratically. When confronted, Lytvynchuk reportedly said he didn’t care and claimed he could easily pay any fines.
This incident comes in the wake of the devastating wildfires that swept through Maui, which saw Lani’s return as a sign of hope for the community. Mayor Richard Bissen stressed the importance of protecting wildlife, saying that Lani symbolizes vulnerability that unites people in concern.
Hawaiian monk seals are critically endangered, with only around 1,600 remaining in the wild. U.S. Attorney Ken Sorenson emphasized the need for such wildlife to be protected, calling them symbols of Hawaii’s unique biodiversity.
If convicted, Lytvynchuk potentially faces a year in prison for each charge and hefty fines under both the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
Historically, attacks on Hawaiian monk seals have been rare, but the 2016 case of a man beating a pregnant seal has raised alarm bells about the ongoing threats these animals face.
