Microsoft has some exciting news for gamers. A new Xbox controller is coming, and it focuses on cloud gaming. Recent images from Brazil’s Anatel regulator give us a sneak peek.
The controller is smaller and looks a lot like options from brands like 8BitDo and HyperX. It’s designed for direct connection to Xbox Cloud Gaming servers using both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, along with Bluetooth 5.3 and a USB-C port. There’s even a unique pairing button on top.
Gamers can expect both black and white models. This controller will come with a rechargeable 500mAh battery, which is a shift from the usual AA batteries found in most current Xbox controllers, except for the Elite models.
Interestingly, this controller wasn’t part of the original plans for 2024. It was supposed to accompany an Xbox Series X refresh that has since been canceled. Instead, this device aims to enhance Microsoft’s cloud gaming strategy with Game Pass. By connecting directly to cloud servers, it promises to reduce latency, similar to what Google’s Stadia controllers offered.
This move comes at a time when cloud gaming is gaining traction. A recent report found that 45% of gamers are interested in trying cloud gaming services, partly due to the convenience they offer. Microsoft is also exploring free, ad-supported access to cloud games, making these services even more appealing.
