Cans for Kids Food Drive in Albany, GA

The Cans for Kids Food Drive took place at the Feeding the Valley Food Bank on May 14. From morning until evening, community members came together to donate food and money to help those in need.

Monetary donations can make a significant impact. For instance:

  • $250 provides 1,500 meals
  • $100 gives 600 meals
  • $50 covers 300 meals
  • $25 offers 150 meals
  • $1 provides 6 meals

At the event, volunteers filled totes with non-perishable items like peanut butter and crackers. Jay Cannon, the facility manager, noted, “We filled one tote with potato chips and crackers, weighing in at 253 pounds.”

Feeding the Valley serves several counties, including Calhoun, Terrell, Lee, and Dougherty. Cannon explained that they distribute about 2,500 meals daily when schools are in session, which doubles to 5,000 during the summer months.

The community’s generosity is vital. While the food drive has ended, you can still drop off donations at Feeding the Valley, located at 1706 Ledo Road.

Recent trends show a growing concern about food insecurity among children in the U.S. According to a 2022 report from the USDA, nearly 13 million children live in food-insecure households. This highlights the importance of initiatives like Cans for Kids.

Helping our local food banks can make a real difference. Every meal counts.
