She appeared on various TV shows and released popular albums, including the well-loved bossa nova ballad “Nothing to Lose” from the 1968 film “The Party,” featuring Peter Sellers. At that time, she was married to singer Andy Williams, whom she met in Las Vegas. Their marriage ended in the mid-1970s, and she later lived with Olympic skier Vladimir “Spider” Sabich near Aspen, Colorado.
On March 21, 1976, Longet shot Sabich, claiming it was an accident. He died from a single shot, and she accompanied him in the ambulance. Their story became a media sensation, drawing attention from around the world, including support from Williams, who believed in her innocence. “I thought it was unfair, I thought she was innocent,” he said in a later interview.
Initially charged with reckless manslaughter, Longet’s trial was plagued with legal issues, including police errors. Despite the circumstances, the jury found her guilty of negligent homicide. She received a light sentence of two years’ probation, a $250 fine, and 30 days in jail, which she could serve at her convenience.
