Astronomers are making huge strides in our understanding of the universe using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Recently, they mapped the “cosmic web,” the largest structure in the universe, with amazing detail. This survey, called COSMOS-Web, reveals galaxies as they existed when the universe was just 1 billion years old.

The cosmic web is like a giant skeleton of filaments and sheets made of dark matter and gas. It shows how galaxies formed and clustered over time, leaving behind vast empty spaces. Think of it like a spider’s web, capturing galaxies as if they were flies stuck on the strands.

The COSMOS-Web findings highlight the JWST’s power and its $10 billion investment. Since it began sending data to Earth in the summer of 2022, it’s been changing our view of the universe. Hossein Hatamnia, who led the research at the University of California, Riverside, states, “JWST has changed our view of the universe. COSMOS-Web allows us to explore how galaxies evolved in clusters over cosmic time.” This includes not just ancient galaxies but also those relatively close to us, up to around 1 billion light-years away.

This depth of analysis is essential. To understand the cosmic web, astronomers need a broad perspective, and COSMOS-Web covers an impressive distance of nearly 14 billion light-years. A recent study suggests that detailed exploration of cosmic structures is more important than ever. According to NASA, the JWST can spot thousands of faint galaxies in a single snapshot, allowing for precise distance measurements.

Bahram Mobasher, another member of the research team, noted the significant improvements over previous studies done with the Hubble Space Telescope. He explained that earlier maps often “smoothed over” many of the cosmic structures. With the JWST, many features are now visible that were previously hidden. He added, “What used to look like a single structure now resolves into many, making this discovery exceptionally exciting.” The findings from this research were published in the Astrophysical Journal on May 6.
