A U.S. military plane carrying over 100 people landed in India on Wednesday. This flight marked the longest deportation since President Trump took office. It highlights the ongoing immigration policy under his administration, which affects countries with leaders he supports, like India.
This was likely the first time a U.S. military aircraft was used for deporting individuals back to India. Last year alone, more than 1,000 Indians were sent back via commercial flights. India is a significant source of unauthorized immigration to the U.S.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has shown readiness to accept deportees. Officials believe India is among the better-equipped nations to handle these situations. However, some local leaders, like Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal from Punjab, have criticized Trump’s strict immigration policies. Dhaliwal pointed out that many deported individuals had traveled illegally in search of better livelihoods.
In a recent interview, he stressed the importance of treating deportees with dignity and urged the Indian government to address the issue more vigorously. “What is their crime?” he asked, emphasizing their struggles for survival. He plans to welcome the deportees at the airport and ensure they are treated humanely.
According to the Pew Research Center, more than 700,000 undocumented Indian immigrants reside in the U.S., which is a significant number compared to other countries. Reports suggest that nearly 20,000 Indian migrants may face imminent deportation. In recent years, an increasing number of Indians have entered the U.S. illegally, mainly through Mexico. Last year alone, over 25,000 Indians were apprehended trying to cross the southern border. Additionally, Indian migrants contributed to a rise in arrests at the northern border with Canada.
