In Jackson, Maine, a vital food pantry is helping hundreds of families each week. The Jackson Food Pantry, located in the Jackson Community Center, relies on 35 dedicated volunteers who show up rain or shine.
“Our operations continue to grow, and our volunteers keep coming, no matter the weather,” shared Cindy Ludden, the pantry’s director. “We are incredibly grateful for their support.” On average, the pantry distributes about 6,500 pounds of fresh produce daily, showcasing the commitment to providing nutritious options.
During regular hours, the pantry serves around 135 vehicles each day, which can represent multiple families. Some vehicles may have up to ten individuals, all receiving essential food supplies. This endeavor ensures that local families can access fresh, healthy food regularly.
In addition to food, the pantry collaborates with Waldo County Bounty to provide seedlings to clients. This initiative encourages people to grow their gardens. One client mentioned their excitement about gardening every summer, reflecting the community’s engagement with food production.
Waldo County Bounty emerged in 2020, responding to the challenges of COVID-19. It connects families needing food with local farmers who struggled to find markets. “We aim to fill the gap between those who need food and those who grow it,” said Angela Baglione, its director.
The organization operates a program that purchases seedlings from Village Side Farm and distributes them to 14 food pantries and soup kitchens in the area. “Connecting people to local produce helps reduce waste and strengthens our community,” Baglione added. “Even a small herb garden can significantly enhance someone’s connection to food and its origins.”
This community effort is crucial, especially as food insecurity continues to be a pressing issue. Recent studies show that over 10% of households in the U.S. experience food shortages. Initiatives like the Jackson Food Pantry and Waldo County Bounty are essential for bridging the gap and supporting families in need.
Through their hard work, these organizations not only provide food but also foster a sense of community and encourage sustainable practices. Their combined efforts ensure that local families have access to nutritious food while empowering them to grow their own.
