On May 22 at 7:30 p.m., the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa will celebrate 100 years of summer sessions with a special event: “He Lei Hoʻokahi” (“To Be As One Lei Adorned”). This performance, part of the Asia Pacific Dance Festival, honors Kumu Hula Darrell Lupenui and highlights 50 years of kāne hula at the Merrie Monarch Festival.
But it’s not just another dance show. This concert showcases the strength and artistry of kāne hula, an essential part of Hawaiian culture. Attendees will enjoy the stories (moʻolelo) that bring Hawaiian traditions to life.
The concert represents a rich legacy. It celebrates the dedication of kumu, dancers, and hālau—Hawaiian dance schools. It also reflects the University’s commitment to cultural education.
According to a recent survey by the National Endowment for the Arts, participation in cultural activities boosts community ties and individual well-being. Events like this foster connections and preserve cultural practices for future generations.
Outreach College at UH Mānoa plays a crucial role in this mission. It opens the door for community engagement, blending education with cultural initiatives. Programs like the Asia Pacific Dance Festival create vital spaces where locals and visitors can learn and appreciate Hawaiian arts.
Overall, “He Lei Hoʻokahi” is more than a performance. It’s a celebration of heritage, a gathering of the community, and a step toward deeper understanding of Hawaiian culture. Join us for this extraordinary night of dance and storytelling at the John F. Kennedy Theatre.
