Asus is launching the ROG NUC 16, its most exciting mini gaming PC yet. This compact device promises impressive specs but may come with a hefty price tag.
Originally, Intel designed NUCs, which stands for “Next Unit of Computing,” to deliver small PCs with solid performance. However, limited customization and high prices hurt their popularity. In 2023, Intel handed off the NUC design to Asus, which has since targeted gamers with space constraints.
The ROG NUC 16 is a powerful step up from its predecessor, featuring Intel’s latest Arrow Lake CPU, the Core Ultra 9 290HX. It supports an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 GPU (though this version isn’t the power-hungry desktop equivalent) and can be configured with up to 128GB of RAM.
Prices haven’t been announced in the U.S., but the starting cost in China is 29,999 yuan, or about $4,420. The special “Moonlight” white version costs even more. Availability is unclear, but the black version is expected soon, while the white version will arrive in June. For comparison, the previous ROG NUC 15 starts at around $3,400 with an older CPU and less memory.
Despite the new technology, some benchmarks show only a slight performance increase over the previous model—about 3% in 3DMark’s “Time Spy.” Performance gain will vary by game.
Recent trends highlight a growing concern about RAM prices impacting consumer electronics, particularly gaming systems that require more memory. This has made high-end devices even pricier. While the ROG NUC 16 is intriguing, some details, like specific GPU configurations, remain under wraps.
Asus also introduced the 2026 ROG Strix Scar 18 gaming laptop, equipped with a 4K, 240Hz mini LED display and the same Intel Core Ultra 290HX CPU. It should be available by mid-year, and like the NUC, it won’t likely be budget-friendly.
Looking at the larger landscape, gaming hardware as a whole is on the rise. A recent survey revealed that over 50% of gamers are exploring new systems in the coming year, often influenced by recent tech advancements. With Asus stepping up their game, the gaming community is eager to see how these new releases perform in real-world tests.
In a market leaning heavily on specifications and performance, Asus is pushing boundaries, but only time will tell if the ROG NUC 16 and Strix Scar 18 meet player expectations and deliver on their promises.
