ROCHESTER, N.Y. — On Friday, Rochester Regional Health welcomed 18 new peace officers who will begin their roles at Rochester General Hospital on June 1. These officers will have powers similar to those of police officers, including the authority to detain individuals, issue appearance tickets, and confiscate illegal weapons.
Rochester Regional Health emphasizes that this initiative is not about increasing police presence but enhancing their current safety measures. The decision comes in response to a recent incident where an individual threatened a nurse and security staff at the hospital.
“After what happened in April, we realized the need for immediate action,” said Tammy Snyder, senior vice president of system operations at Rochester Regional Health. “Now, we’ll be able to handle these situations in real-time and ensure safer environments for our staff and patients.”
This new program has been in the works since November 2024 and addresses existing safety concerns. With the program’s success, Rochester Regional Health plans to expand it to Unity Hospital and other facilities in the near future.
According to a recent survey by the National Hospital Safety Study, 80% of healthcare workers express concerns about safety in their workplaces, which highlights the need for such initiatives.
