Next week, Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to visit Beijing for a two-day meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, according to the Kremlin. This visit, scheduled for May 19-20, celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Sino-Russian Treaty of Friendship. The two leaders plan to discuss various topics, including trade and significant international issues.
Relations between China and Russia have strengthened, especially since the onset of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. As Western sanctions have isolated Moscow, Beijing has become a crucial trade partner for Russia. This evolving dynamic is a testament to how geopolitical needs can reshape alliances.
During previous visits, such as in September 2025, Xi referred to Putin as an “old friend.” Such familiar language highlights the growing rapport between the two nations. Moreover, Putin will take part in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen later this year.
In Ukraine, tensions remain high. On Saturday, Ukraine repatriated the bodies of fallen soldiers after a prisoner exchange with Russia. Ukrainian officials reported that 528 bodies, believed to belong to Ukrainian servicemen, were returned to Ukraine. Expert teams are now focused on identifying these individuals.
The recent exchanges included 205 prisoners of war, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announcing that this was just the first phase of a larger swap involving 1,000 POWs from each side. Some of the exchanged Ukrainians had been held by Russia since 2022 and participated in intense battles.
Meanwhile, Russia conducted drone attacks on Ukraine’s Odesa region, targeting residential buildings and injuring two people. Ukraine’s Air Force reported shooting down 269 of the 294 drones launched overnight. In a counter-response, Ukraine launched attacks in Russia’s Belgorod region, resulting in civilian casualties and property damage.
As both countries navigate the complexities of war and diplomacy, the evolving relationships between nations can significantly affect global dynamics. The interplay of strategy, power, and friendship continues to shape the geopolitical landscape.
