NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Metropolitan Action Commission recently held its Community Action Day at the MAC Frederick Douglass Head Start Center. This event aimed to provide vital support like food, childcare, and utility assistance directly to families in need.
For local resident Jatoi Bender, such help is crucial. She expressed relief, saying these events prevent families from falling through the cracks. “This support is a lifesaver for those barely making ends meet,” she shared. With rising costs for essentials like rent and groceries, many families are feeling the pinch. Bender noted that the organizers were incredibly accommodating, offering extra support without hesitation.
Her son Carson enjoyed an unexpected perk from the day—free boxing classes. “I never thought we’d find something like this here,” she said.
Childcare is another pressing issue in Tennessee. Shaneka Culver, a fellow attendee, pointed out the difficulty in accessing reliable childcare. Programs like Head Start make a significant difference, allowing parents to focus on other responsibilities.
The MAC emphasizes its ongoing support beyond this event. They offer rental and utility assistance and provide information about their other programs.
Held at 621 Howerton Street, the event ran from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Attendees also had access to various community resources, like WeGo Public Transit distributing free bus passes and Nashville General Hospital offering health screenings.
As temperatures rise in the summer months, the MAC’s utility assistance team was on hand, helping residents apply for aid through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). This program helps low-income families pay for utilities, cooling, and other essential costs.
Families could also enroll in MAC’s preschool and childcare programs, including Head Start for children aged six weeks to five years. These programs provide significant savings, amounting to over $12 million annually for local families.
Jamekia Bies, MAC’s Executive Director, highlighted their mission: “We’re proud to unite resources to uplift Davidson County families.” Every year, MAC serves over 10,000 households and provides around $9 million in assistance, making a meaningful impact since its founding in 1964.
Recent statistics reveal that 1 in 6 Davidson County residents faces food insecurity, making events like this even more critical. Community support can go a long way in alleviating these challenges.
