PITTSBURGH (AP) — Aaron Rodgers is back with the Pittsburgh Steelers. After much anticipation, he signed a one-year deal, marking his return to a team with a rich football tradition.
At 42, Rodgers had a strong season last year, throwing for 24 touchdowns and just 7 interceptions. His leadership and skills have made him a standout, not just in Pittsburgh, but throughout his career, especially during his time with the Green Bay Packers.
He’s excited to work again with Mike McCarthy, his former coach who recently took the helm of the Steelers after Mike Tomlin’s long tenure. The bond they built over 13 years in Green Bay helped turn Rodgers into one of the best quarterbacks in the game.
This time around, both Rodgers and McCarthy are at different points in their careers. For Rodgers, this could be his last season, while McCarthy is close to the end of his coaching journey.
The Steelers encouraged Rodgers to return, but he took his time, missing certain deadlines before finally signing. Interestingly, the team filed a special paperwork move called an “unrestricted free agent tender” to protect themselves in case he signed elsewhere.
It’s unclear how many teams were interested in Rodgers, but last year he took his time joining the Steelers and quickly earned his teammates’ respect.
With the Steelers, Rodgers joins a growing quarterback roster, including rookie Drew Allar, veteran Mason Rudolph, and Will Howard, who was picked in the sixth round. His experience will greatly benefit the younger quarterbacks, as he once learned from Brett Favre.
Pittsburgh also made strides in its receiving lineup, adding Michael Pittman Jr. and Germie Bernard to give Rodgers more options, especially after defenses focused on DK Metcalf last season.
As for when Rodgers will hit the field, the Steelers start organized team activities on May 18. Although these are typically optional, he may choose to sit out until the mandatory minicamp from June 2-4 to focus on his training.
When training camp kicks off in late July, fans will be eager to see him lead the Steelers, aiming for their first playoff victory in a decade.
Experts believe that Rodgers’ experience and McCarthy’s familiarity with each other can energize the team’s performance this season. With the current NFL shifting towards a younger generation of quarterbacks, veterans like Rodgers still hold significant value in mentoring and guiding less experienced players.
