The Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA) is ramping up its efforts for environmental sustainability. Their recent event, “Walk for a Greener Nigeria,” held in Abuja, highlighted the need for collective action against climate change through initiatives like tree planting.
During the event, Deputy Comptroller-General Timing Bomodi shared how this initiative, which has already planted over 1,000 trees, supports ecological preservation. He emphasized that sustainable practices should extend to all Customs formations and beyond. “A healthier environment means a healthier community,” he stated, pointing out that trees play a crucial role in improving air quality.
COWA President, Mrs. Kikelomo Adeniyi, explained that the “Green Border Initiative” aims to raise awareness of climate change’s effects on both rural and urban areas. She noted that communities like Idiroko, Seme, and Ufom have already seen positive impacts and that efforts will be expanded further.
Adeniyi highlighted the importance of planting economic trees, saying, “We are planting not just for today, but for future generations.” This blend of environmental action and community benefit is crucial in combating climate change.
Mariam Bukar Hassan, an early United Nations Global Advocate, praised COWA’s initiative. She reminded attendees that climate change directly impacts local communities, causing issues like desert encroachment. “We need better partnerships between government and organizations to enhance these efforts,” she urged.
Recent reports indicate that many Nigerians feel the effects of climate change firsthand, making initiatives like COWA’s even more vital. According to a recent survey by the Nigerian Environmental Society, 85% of respondents believe climate change is a pressing concern in their daily lives.
