Ramesh emphasized the importance of national defense but argued for better options. He suggested improving existing defense infrastructure instead of pushing forward with the Great Nicobar project. For instance, enhancing INS Baaz’s runway and building a naval jetty could provide benefits without the same ecological risks.
The plans for INS Baaz have been pending approval for almost five years and would minimize environmental harm. He also advocated for expanding the Andaman and Nicobar Command’s assets to strengthen defense capabilities.
Questioning the project’s military justification, Ramesh noted that the proposed transshipment port and township do not enhance India’s military strength. He reiterated his belief that the current form of the Great Nicobar Island Project poses a significant risk to the environment and called for alternative solutions proposed by experts in the naval field.
