A Canadian passenger on the MV Hondius cruise ship has tested positive for the Andes hantavirus. This was announced by the Public Health Agency of Canada recently. The affected individual and their spouse were hospitalized after both showed mild symptoms. They will remain in isolation while receiving care.
A third person, unrelated to the couple, was also taken to the hospital for evaluation. Health officials are being extra cautious and have sent samples for testing to the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg. Results are expected within two days. The agency stated that the overall risk to Canadians from this outbreak is low, but they are taking necessary precautions to ensure public safety.
Currently, health authorities are monitoring 36 individuals, including four passengers from the cruise ship, who are in isolation. As of now, there are no reported cases of the Andes hantavirus in the U.S.
In Washington state, health officials are looking into six suspected cases of the Andes hantavirus. Five of these cases are linked to individuals who were on an international flight with the passenger from the Hondius. All of these individuals are being watched for symptoms.
Additionally, in a separate incident, another person in Washington tested positive for the Sin Nombre hantavirus, which is the most common type in North America. This strain is typically contracted through exposure to deer mice droppings, urine, or saliva, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
