West Long Branch, NJ – North Carolina A&T wrapped up their 2026 baseball season on a dramatic note, losing to the Monmouth Hawks 8-7 in a thrilling game capped off by a wild pitch.
The Aggies faced a challenging season, finishing with a record of 14-38 and 5-25 in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA). Although they struggled in weekend games, they showcased promise in midweek matchups. Monmouth, on the other hand, ended the series with an overall record of 29-21, securing their place in the upcoming CAA Baseball Championship Tournament.
The game on Saturday was particularly intense. A&T fought hard, tying the score at 5-5 in the eighth inning. Senior Luis Gomez ignited a rally with a single, followed by a two-run homer from sophomore JT Taylor, putting the Aggies ahead 7-5. However, Monmouth’s RJ Mustaro quickly responded with a home run of his own, tying the game once again.
As the ninth inning unfolded, the tension built. A&T’s pitcher, Grayson King, hit a batter, leading to a series of plays that loaded the bases for Monmouth. The climax came when a wild pitch allowed the winning run to score, sealing the fate of the Aggies.
Taylor had a standout game, going 2-for-2 with five RBIs, and marked his second career game with two home runs. His performance, along with solid contributions from seniors Nick DiCarlo and Gomez, helped A&T keep the game competitive.
This season’s ups and downs reflect a broader trend in college baseball. According to a 2023 NCAA report, teams with balanced offensive and defensive strategies often see better results, emphasizing the need for strong mid-game performances—a lesson that A&T can build on for the future.
With emerging talents like Taylor, the Aggies can hope to turn the page next season. Engaging with coaching staff and fine-tuning strategies will be crucial as they seek to improve their conference standing.
