India aims to reach $2 trillion in exports over the next five years, according to Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal. This goal is part of the nation’s vision for an ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India). Goyal made this announcement during a national trade leaders’ conclave in New Delhi, where he also introduced a website for the Bharat Vyapar Mahotsav set to begin in 86 days.
Goyal expressed optimism about the event, which will showcase Indian-made products and services. He believes it will help enhance the quality and branding of these goods to compete globally. With the support of various trade organizations, the fair aims to gather around a thousand businesses and promote local products.
India’s export figures are promising, having reached $863 billion this year, which is 5% higher than last year. The government has set a target of $1 trillion for the current fiscal year. Goyal highlighted ongoing negotiations for free trade agreements with 38 countries, which will help Indian exporters by reducing import duties.
The focus is not just on increasing exports but also on reducing import dependence. Goyal pointed to sectors like capital goods and medical devices, where Indian small businesses (MSMEs) are starting to show promise. To support these firms, the government has expanded the MSME definition to include those with a turnover of up to ₹500 crore, excluding export revenue to ensure they remain eligible for benefits while expanding internationally.
Goyal also emphasized the importance of including women entrepreneurs in this initiative. He suggested that 25 women from each state be invited to the fair and proposed kiosks to promote cashless payments through RuPay cards and UPI. He believes these steps can spark new ideas in the market.
During his speech, Goyal praised the infrastructure at Bharat Mandapam and Yashobhoomi, viewing them as reflections of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for world-class facilities in India. He noted that every detail, from local artisan-made furniture to Kashmir’s carpets, highlights India’s craftsmanship.
In conclusion, Goyal believes government initiatives like the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme can kick-start the economy, but lasting success hinges on industry involvement. He envisions the 80th Independence Day in 2027 as a moment to showcase a self-reliant and sustainable India.
