Piyush Goyal, India’s Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, recently announced an ambitious goal: India aims to achieve $2 trillion in exports within the next five years. This initiative is part of India’s vision for a self-reliant future, known as ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat.’
During a national conclave of trade leaders in New Delhi, Goyal launched a website for the Bharat Vyapar Mahotsav—a major fair showcasing Indian-made goods and services. Set to kick off in 86 days, the fair is expected to help boost India’s presence in global markets through improved quality, packaging, and marketing.
Goyal highlighted impressive export growth, noting that India’s exports reached $863 billion this year, marking a 5% increase from last year. The new target for this year is set at $1 trillion. To support this, the Commerce Ministry is negotiating free trade agreements with 38 nations, aiming to enhance access for Indian exporters.
The minister emphasized the importance of reducing imports alongside boosting exports. He pointed out sectors like medical devices, agriculture, and capital goods, where small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are already building capabilities. Notably, the government has expanded the definition of MSMEs to support more businesses, allowing them to thrive even as they grow internationally.
Goyal also encouraged the participation of women entrepreneurs in the upcoming fair. He suggested inviting 25 women from each state and proposed kiosks for cashless payment options to promote digital transactions. He believes this will energize trade and modernize India’s economic landscape.
He praised facilities like Bharat Mandapam, saying they reflect India’s craftsmanship and capabilities through local materials. Goyal stated that while government schemes like Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) can provide a boost, the industry’s involvement is crucial for long-term success.
In essence, India’s push for self-reliance isn’t just about exports; it’s a holistic approach to empower local industries and create a sustainable economy. The success of these initiatives could be showcased by India’s 80th Independence Day in 2027.
This goal isn’t just aspirational; with the support of 140 crore Indians united in purpose, there’s an optimistic outlook for the development of a thriving, self-sufficient India.
