Ryan Kucera has stepped down as the head coach of Eastern Michigan University’s tennis team. This was announced by Scott Wetherbee, the Vice President and Director of Athletics, on May 18. A search for Kucera’s successor is already underway.

Wetherbee expressed his best wishes for Kucera’s future endeavors. He also emphasized the need to find a new coach who can further elevate the program and aim for a Mid-American Conference championship.

Kucera was hired just last August. During his brief tenure, he led the Eagles to a 34-34 overall record and 13-18 in MAC play. Notably, he guided the team to the semifinals of the 2024 MAC Championships, their first appearance since 2018. His record of 34 wins ranks sixth in the program’s history, while his 13 MAC victories sit fifth. He was instrumental in transforming the Chippewa Club into a formidable home court, achieving a remarkable 25-6 record at home. The Eagles went undefeated at home in the 2023-24 season, the first time since 2004.

Kucera thanked the administration and support staff for their support during his time at EMU. “I am extremely grateful for the opportunity they provided me,” he said, citing pride in both on-court achievements and the positive direction of the program.

Under Kucera’s leadership, three players earned All-MAC honors, including Daniella Shved, who was recognized in both 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. Newcomer Cylova Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya received the MAC Freshman of the Year award, marking a significant milestone as the first Eastern player to achieve this since 2013.

Kucera’s impact on individual players was considerable. He guided Sabina Brichackova and Prerna Vichare to impressive records, leading them to become top competitors in doubles play. Their performance at the 2024 MAC Fall Individuals was a highlight, as it marked the return of individual competitions after a long hiatus.
