New York State is updating its environmental regulations. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is introducing draft amendments to the State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA). These changes are part of the Environmental Justice Siting Law, signed by Governor Kathy Hochul in 2022.
The proposed amendments focus on the challenges faced by disadvantaged communities. These neighborhoods often deal with higher pollution levels, the impacts of climate change, and various socioeconomic issues. The updates will require thorough consideration of these factors in future projects.
Additionally, the revisions aim to simplify SEQRA reviews for small-scale, multi-family housing developments. This aligns with Hochul’s commitment to making affordable housing more accessible.
The updated regulations also include new questions on environmental assessment forms, specifically targeting disadvantaged areas. This will help ensure that environmental reviews take into account the unique circumstances these communities face.
If you want to share your thoughts on these changes, you can submit comments until May 7. There will be both in-person and virtual public hearings to discuss the proposed amendments.
