Nicolas Winding Refn is back at Cannes with his latest film, “Her Private Hell.” This time, he’s igniting conversations with a cast featuring Sophie Thatcher from “Yellowjackets” and Charles Melton from “Riverdale.” After making waves at Cannes with Todd Haynes’ “May December,” Melton has redefined his career.
The atmosphere was electric, even with pouring rain as Refn and the cast arrived. As the credits rolled, audience applause turned into a standing ovation, with Thatcher visibly moved. Refn shared his passion for this film, revealing a deeply personal experience: he had died for 25 minutes before being resuscitated. He reflected, “Life has a new meaning now. I have 25 years left to make the most of it.”
He emphasized that being back at Cannes felt monumental. With a vivid storyline, “Her Private Hell” features Thatcher as a troubled actress grappling with personal issues while a mysterious figure, The Leather Man, is on a violent spree. Melton portrays an Army private searching for his missing daughter. The film includes an ensemble cast, such as Havana Rose Liu and Dougray Scott.
Historically, Refn has captivated Cannes audiences before. His film “Drive” won him the best director prize in 2011, while later projects generated mixed reactions. “Her Private Hell” is notable not just for its story but also as Refn’s return to feature films after a decade focused on television, with works like “Too Old to Die Young.”
While “Her Private Hell” is not in the award competition at Cannes, its buzz adds to Neon’s impressive record at the festival, having previously won the Palme d’Or for “Parasite.”
