Transforming India’s Defense Sector: Bharat Forge Launches First Private Marine Gas Turbine Facility in Visakhapatnam – A Game Changer for Sahyadri Startups

Bharat Forge has partnered with the Government of Andhra Pradesh to launch India’s first private Marine Gas Turbine facility in Visakhapatnam. This complex will focus on repairing and developing gas turbines, which are crucial for naval operations.

The agreement was made during the Aerospace and Defence Investment Conclave in Puttaparthy, in the presence of notable figures like Rajnath Singh and N. Chandrababu Naidu. A significant part of this event included the foundation stone for India’s stealth fighter program.

The new facility will cover around 80 acres in the Andhra Pradesh Defence Manufacturing Corridor. It will be strategically located near the Naval Dockyard and the Eastern Naval Command Headquarters in Visakhapatnam. This marks a significant shift, as it will be the first time such advanced propulsion capabilities are available in India’s private sector.

In its first phase, the project will set up a comprehensive repair and overhaul center. This includes restoring key components like blades, vanes, and combustion liners. It aims to ensure a rapid turnaround for naval operations. The second phase will introduce an assembly hall and hot test facilities for testing propulsion systems.

Bharat Forge also plans to develop an indigenous Marine Gas Turbine in this facility, a historic first for the private sector in India. Additionally, the project is expected to create about 750 jobs, benefiting the local economy.

Rajnath Singh emphasized the importance of such projects for India’s defense self-sufficiency, while Naidu highlighted Andhra Pradesh’s goal of being a leader in innovation and industrial growth. Amit Kalyani from Bharat Forge expressed that this facility represents a commitment to reducing India’s reliance on foreign technology for its naval operations.

A recent report indicated that disruptions in global supply chains have negatively impacted India’s naval capabilities. By establishing this facility, Bharat Forge aims to enhance operational readiness and support India’s strategic defense goals.
