Traders on the New York Stock Exchange are on edge. They are waiting for Nvidia’s first-quarter earnings report, which could impact the entire market.
Recently, S&P 500 futures barely moved, while Nasdaq 100 futures ticked up slightly. However, bond yields are rising, putting pressure on stocks. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite faced three losing sessions in a row. The S&P 500 fell by 0.67%, and the Nasdaq dropped by 0.84%. The Dow Jones also dipped by 322.24 points, about 0.65%.
A significant factor in this downturn? The U.S. Treasury yield, which recently passed 5.19%, the highest in nearly 19 years. The 10-year Treasury yield hit 4.687%, its highest since January 2025. This surge follows reports suggesting inflation might be on the rise again. According to a recent survey, 67% of investors are concerned about inflation affecting their portfolios.
Looking ahead, eyes are on Nvidia. Ben Snider, an expert from Goldman Sachs, highlighted that Nvidia has contributed about 20% of the S&P 500’s gains this year. “Tomorrow’s numbers matter, as they signal the direction of AI infrastructure,” he mentioned on CNBC. This reinforces the importance of Nvidia’s performance.
Investors are also anticipating the minutes from the Federal Reserve’s April meeting, set to release soon. These insights could shape market expectations regarding interest rates.
Earnings reports from major companies like Lowe’s, Target, and Hasbro are also due before Wednesday’s market open. Many traders are hoping for positive news to shift market sentiment.
In a fast-evolving landscape where technology plays a crucial role, Nvidia’s report could be a turning point. As more companies integrate AI, the demand for semiconductors and tech companies will only increase, potentially stabilizing the market.
