Slippery Rock University is making strides in multicultural education through lively competition. Recently, four SRU students clinched first place at the Frederick Douglass Institute Collaborative conference and debate tournament at West Chester University.
The winning team featured:
- Eliana Perez, a sophomore studying accounting and political science from Pittsburgh.
- Andrei Pagnotta, a political science major set to graduate in 2026.
- Kat Dickey, a junior majoring in communication and political science from Daisytown.
- Hannah Cherry, a sophomore focused on exercise science, also from Pittsburgh.
Coached by Heather Frederick, a political science professor, the SRU team faced off against ten universities, debating vaccine mandates in Pennsylvania. This tournament isn’t just about competition; it addresses key issues in policy, social justice, and ethics, encouraging students to think critically.
Franklyn Charles, an associate professor and director of the FDI at SRU, accompanied the team. The FDI Collaborative is dedicated to creating initiatives that bolster inclusivity and success within Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education.
“The FDI has opened doors for me to explore different viewpoints and enhance my research and presentation skills,” said Dickey. “It’s rewarding to see our efforts make a real impact from start to finish.”
Debates like these are crucial in today’s world. A 2021 study revealed that over 70% of young adults believe they lack adequate platforms for meaningful discussions on societal issues. Events like the FDI conference foster not only debate skills but also civic engagement among students. They help bridge gaps in understanding and encourage diverse perspectives.
