Asset management firm Piper Serica has just introduced the Bharat Tech Fund, aiming to gather Rs 800 crore to invest in Indian tech start-ups. The firm plans to wrap up fundraising by December this year.
Director Ajay Modi shared that the Bharat Tech Fund is classified as a Category II Alternative Investment Fund, with a core target of Rs 600 crore and an additional Rs 200 crore option. This means it could potentially grow to Rs 800 crore.
Since 2022, Piper Serica has supported India’s tech startup scene with its Category I AIF. Modi noted an exciting trend: “Indian founders are creating innovative, engineering-driven businesses that can compete globally.” They look for leaders with not only technical skills but also the ability to build solid organizations and sustainable economic models.
Currently, Piper Serica has invested in 35 companies spanning various sectors such as semiconductors, AI, space technology, defense tech, biosciences, and fintech.
According to recent data, funding for Indian startups saw a dip in 2023, dropping to $24 billion from $38 billion in 2022. Despite this, venture capital interest remains strong, especially in tech sectors that focus on sustainability and innovation.
Modi’s insights reflect a broader shift where founders are not just thinking locally but are also aiming to capture global markets. This aligns with a social media trend where tech entrepreneurs share experiences of navigating challenges and building businesses that reach beyond borders.
